Bomba Estereo advocates for health

Li Saumet didn't need many reasons to agree to collaborate on a campaign promoting avocados from Mexico.
“My parents suffer from diabetes,” said the singer of the Colombian band Bomba Estereo. “So, all of this makes me think and makes me more aware of what one can contribute […] so that people pay more attention to their health.” This is nothing new in the life of the artist, originally from the Caribbean city of Santa Marta. On her social media, she shares details of what she does to stay healthy, both physically and mentally, a path she began years ago. “I’ve been on a spiritual path for a while now,” she said. “I’ve been taking care of myself with my diet for some time, and on my social media, I post recipes and wellness tips, things like how to feel better.” Avocado is one of the most sought-after fruits in the United States because it has dozens of beneficial properties and is also sugar-free. And this is where it's most consumed, especially during the Super Bowl, when fans of the sport often prepare dishes made with this ingredient. As part of the campaign, in which Avocados From Mexico partnered with the American Diabetes Association, Li recorded a remix of Juan Luis Guerra's popular song, "La Bilirrubina." This remix celebrates the song's 35th anniversary by removing the word "insulin" from the lyrics. Insulin is the substance that many people with diabetes depend on and usually obtain through injections. According to statistics, the Hispanic community is 66% more likely to be diagnosed with diabetes compared to non-Latino whites. This campaign seeks to promote the prevention and management of this condition. But this isn't the only project Li is working on. The band is currently producing a new album inspired by the desire to improve, “to be a channel for other people’s lives,” the singer said. But there’s no rush, she added. The band is taking its time because it hopes to release “a great album,” even better than “Astropical.”The album for which she received a Grammy nomination in the Best Latin Rock or Alternative Album category was a collaboration with the Venezuelan band Rawayana. Between albums, Li continues to work with other artists on various collaborations, including Carlos Vives, Bad Bunny, and others. “That has been one of the most collaborative periods I’ve had, precisely because being on my own allowed me to explore more with other producers,” she said about the departure two years ago of Simon Mejia, who was part of Bomba Estereo. “I feel that changed my musical perspective and my way of being, of seeing myself more as a songwriter.” She will then embark on a tour and perform at festivals with her new album, which will not only be for dancing and singing, but will go “beyond music,” she warned.
