By 6 p.m. ET on Tuesday, approximately 1.85 million New Yorkers had already voted in the city’s mayoral election — a figure that surpasses the final total of any election since 1993.

According to The New York Times, voter participation is on pace to exceed 2 million for the first time since 1969, when John V. Lindsay secured re-election.

The surge in turnout is largely attributed to the intense competition in this race, which features progressive Democrat Zohran Mamdani facing independent Andrew Cuomo and Republican Curtis Sliwa.

Recent polls indicate that Mamdani continues to lead voter preference with 46.1%, maintaining a 14.1-point advantage over Cuomo, who stands at 31.8%, while Sliwa holds 16.3% support.

Another survey conducted by Atlas Intel also places the Democrat in the lead, though with a narrower margin—43.9% for Mamdani, 39.4% for Cuomo, and 15.5% for Sliwa, according to CBS.

Mamdani, who appears poised for victory, has become the talk of the city since defeating the veteran Cuomo in the primaries, despite his limited experience as a state assemblyman. His socialist-leaning platform has, however, sparked unease among party leaders and moderates. Former President Donald Trump labeled Mamdani a “communist” and surprisingly endorsed Cuomo, whose campaign has received millions in contributions from prominent figures across both parties.

At 34, Mamdani could become New York’s youngest mayor since 1892 — and its first Muslim mayor. Despite raising only a fraction of Cuomo’s campaign funds, Mamdani has energized young voters, many of whom have joined his campaign as volunteers. The Ugandan-born candidate cast his ballot early Tuesday morning in Queens, declaring that the city is “on the verge of making history” and ready “to move beyond the politics of the past.”
