Recently, through a statement, the US multinational financial services and private banking company, Bank of America, announced that it plans to invest $150 million in the coming months to expand its staff and develop its workforce.

According to the banking institution based in Charlotte, North Carolina, it plans for the next two years to hire about 1,000 additional apprentices to hold positions in technology, business areas, retail banking, among others.

Brian Moynihan, President and Chief Executive Officer of Bank of America, said in a statement that this is one of his strategies to help create a qualified American workforce for the future.

This hiring announcement by the financial institution occurs at a time when most sectors are looking for staff with higher skills than university degrees, giving them the opportunity to grow in areas where previously accessed through academic preparation.

In this regard, Moynihan noted that Bank of America’s learning and development programs “underline the continued commitment to broadening opportunities and helping talented people develop the skills needed to succeed. We appreciate the spirit of reform and pragmatism that the Department of Labor is contributing to this important work, which will provide opportunities for the private sector to do even more,” he added.

Bank of America, which is currently considered the second largest banking institution in the United States, also announced that for the next five years it expects to add some 10,000 military-experienced workers and another 8,000 people from vocational training centers.

Faced with the bank’s initiative, which so far has 40 percent of its hired employees without a bachelor’s degree, Interim Secretary of Labor, Keith Sonderling, said: “I congratulate Bank of America for investing in workforce learning and development programs that prepare Americans for highly qualified and well-paid jobs, while helping employers create the skilled workforce they need in their local communities,” he said.

For Sonderling, “American workers deserve the opportunity to develop successful careers without having to leave their home cities,” he said in a statement.
