TJ Maxx closed several stores in the U.S. during 2026 and an update released this week re-focused on locations that have already dropped their curtains. So far, three closures have been confirmed in Massachusetts and Maryland, including a well-known three-storey branch in one of Boston’s busiest shopping areas.

The news may generate concern among the chain’s regular customers, but it doesn’t respond to a general withdrawal from TJ Maxx. The latest official data shows the opposite: the company continues to increase the number of establishments and its parent company, TJX Companies, has just raised its long-term expansion goals.

The updated list of confirmed closures includes:

One of the most visible closures was 360 Newbury Street, in Boston. The store occupied three floors of a renowned building designed by architect Frank Gehry and had been operating in that direction for a decade.

The closure was previously announced by a warn notification from Massachusetts. The official document noted that 117 workers would be affected by the beginning of January 2026, although the company would offer them the possibility of moving to other branches.

TJ Maxx then explained that he continuously reviews his real estate strategy and that the decision responded to that assessment. The company also noted that the Boston area continues to be an important market for the company.
