Rising costs for essential goods have significantly impacted American family budgets in recent years, with expenses for basic necessities such as food, medications, services, and housing reaching historic highs. This includes increased costs for both purchasing, renting, and repairing homes.

A recent report by LendingTree found that the average cost of home renovations or repairs over the past decade has increased by 76.1%. The report indicates that U.S. households may incur expenses ranging from $1,200 to $2,113, depending on the specific requirements of the project.

Despite rising repair costs for housing, homeowners are opting to remain in their properties, driven by several factors, primarily a limited inventory of homes and elevated mortgage rates, which have reached 7% this year, significantly exceeding the rates of many existing mortgages, typically under 3%.

LendingTree's chief consumer finance analyst, Matt Schulz, attributes the increasing cost of home renovations to the rising prices of various goods and services, with labor and construction costs likely playing a significant role.

US housing builders' confidence has reached historic lows over the past year, primarily driven by labor shortages resulting from stringent immigration policies and rising costs of construction materials, which in turn are impacting property prices.

Many families are hesitant to refinance their homes due to the risk of losing a favorable mortgage rate. They are reluctant to give up their current low rate, often as low as 3%, in favor of a potentially higher rate, such as 7%, which they may be able to secure today. As a result, they choose to remain in their current situation rather than seeking alternative options.

The analysis reveals that the average cost of renovating a home is approximately $1,706. Key areas of focus for common reforms include upgrading water heaters, washing machines, and garbage disposal systems, as well as replacing other household appliances.

According to a LendingTree analyst, home renovations can be dramatic and extensive, but it's the frequent and ongoing maintenance and repairs that are more typical. These smaller, routine expenses can add up quickly, posing a significant financial challenge for many families, who may find themselves constantly addressing minor issues that can cost hundreds of dollars, rather than the thousands spent on major renovations.
