Retail sales in the United States experienced a 0.8 percent increase in September, according to a report released by the Department of Commerce. This figure surpassed the 0.3 percent growth anticipated by economists and was lower than the 1.3 percent increase observed in August.

US consumers demonstrated resilience in the face of elevated prices, particularly in the categories of gasoline, food, and housing.

According to recent data from the Department of Commerce, retail sales in gas stations showed a slight increase of 0.2% in September, with a more substantial annual growth of 6.4%. Meanwhile, sales of furniture and household items rose by 1.3%, electronics and electrodomestic products by 0.6%, and online transactions experienced a 0.3% increase.

BDO's national director of retail and consumer products division, Natalie Kotlyar, noted that September's retail growth indicates continued consumer spending, although she cautioned against viewing it as a broad-based economic strength.

The Consumer Price Index rose by 0.6% in September, resulting in an annual inflation rate of 3.7%. This increase comes amidst economic uncertainty, partly fueled by the ongoing conflict in the Middle East, which has also contributed to a 1.3% rise in wholesale prices during the same month.

Kotlyar attributes part of the increase to higher prices driven by inflation exceeding 3% and elevated gasoline costs. Many consumers are responding by seeking discounts and promotions to manage their budgets effectively.
