Each year, the Water Replenishment District (WRD) draws on the creativity of local students to raise awareness about the importance of water and its conservation through its annual art contest. They are currently taking submissions for their 12th annual edition.

Selected works will appear in their 2027 Water Awareness Calendar, which will include conservation illustrations created by 24 talented students from across southern Los Angeles County. The calendar, which is distributed to thousands of homes across the area, serves as a practical reminder of the crucial role water plays in our daily lives and the need to protect it for future generations.

The Water Awareness Calendar is produced annually as part of WRD's student art contest, open to students in kindergarten through sixth grade throughout WRD's service area such as Bell, Bell Gardens, Inglewood, La Mirada, Lawndale, Gardena, Cerrito, Los Angeles, Vernon, Whitter and many more.

This year, the contest also included classroom art lessons, in which WRD staff interacted with students to link the topics of groundwater and water conservation with their artistic expressions.

“Every year we are amazed by the incredible talent and passion of the student artists who participate in our competition,” said Sergio Calderón, president of the WRD Board of Directors, in a statement. "Their artwork inspires our community to take action to protect our water resources. We are proud to recognize these young ambassadors and all the students who participated this year."

Prizes for students

A jury selected the artworks based on artistic creativity and their ability to raise awareness about groundwater conservation, water preservation and environmental stewardship.

This year, a record 1,500 works of art were submitted from nearly 125 schools, making the selection process highly competitive. Each selected winner receives school supplies and a $75 gift card, generously provided by sponsor funds.

Themes for 2027 include: guardians of our water, nature's water heroes, every drop counts, making small changes to conserve water. In past years, students have drawn a drop of water playing soccer with a group of children, a home that teaches three different ways to conserve water at home, such as limiting your time when you bathe and when you brush your teeth. Also, how to limit the amount of water you use when watering your garden.

In addition to being included in the 2027 calendar, teachers who encourage their students to participate can also win a $100 scholarship for water and planet education.

The competition closes this November 1 and students who want to participate can upload their drawings online or send them by mail.

WRD has awarded dozens of water education grants to teachers to encourage them to incorporate more water and environmental literacy content into their classes. In the past, some teachers have used these funds to revitalize the school's community garden, which is used to teach about water conservation, among other topics. Another teacher used the money to buy materials for an activity about water pollution.

"My students brought new life to our garden. They wanted to create a garden that attracted pollinators using drought-tolerant plants. They asked questions, researched, learned, weeded the garden, and planted seeds and other plants," said Yvonne P., Wesley Gaines Elementary School, Paramount School District, in a WRD statement. "They will also be watching the garden for the next six weeks to see what happens. They had a wonderful time."
