A two-year-old boy was emergency hospitalized after suffering a cocaine overdose in a home rented through Airbnb in Wildwood, New Jersey. The minor managed to survive thanks to the quick intervention of emergency services, while the man who was in charge of taking care of him was arrested and faces several criminal charges.

Authorities identified the defendant as Alexander T. Moles, 39, who, according to the investigation, was supposed to supervise the child and other minors while the child's mother took a shower before leaving the property on Monday morning.

According to court documents cited by local media, when the mother left the bathroom she observed that her son was drowsy and had difficulty breathing.

The child responded to treatment with naloxone

According to the investigation, Moles decided to take the minor in his vehicle to a local hospital and, during the trip, he called the mother to ask if it was convenient to let the child fall asleep.

The woman responded that it was not safe and immediately alerted the emergency services, who went to the property located at the intersection of 21st and New Jersey avenues.

Before the first responders, Moles assured that he believed that the minor had ingested painkillers.

Medical teams administered two doses of naloxone nasally to reverse the effects of the poisoning. The boy responded favorably to treatment and was subsequently transferred to Cooper University Cape Regional Hospital, where blood tests confirmed the presence of cocaine in his system.

As part of the investigation, authorities searched the rental property and found a partially consumed orange and white pill, several aluminum wrappers identified as tapentadol hydrochloride, a clear plastic bag with a white substance, and several short tubes, presumably used for drug consumption.

Tapentadol is a prescription opioid analgesic used to treat chronic and neuropathic pain. The authorities indicated that this substance can be used improperly in combination with other drugs.

The Cape May County Prosecutor's Office said Moles, who works as an emergency medical technician for the Paterson Fire Department, was arrested Tuesday.

The man faces charges of endangering the welfare of a minor, possession of cocaine, possession of drug paraphernalia and unlawful possession of prescription drugs.

Following a detention hearing on Friday, he was released under conditions while the judicial process continues.

If convicted, he could face a sentence of up to 10 years in prison.

Authorities have not said how the boy gained access to the cocaine or whether additional charges will be filed as the investigation progresses.
