A 43-year-old man and his wife are being investigated in connection with the fatal shooting of 17-year-old Alyssa Wilson, who was struck by gunfire while driving on Interstate 170 in the San Luis metropolitan area of Missouri on October 14.

Willie Herndon has been charged with first-degree murder, armed criminal action and unlawful possession of a firearm by a person with a prior conviction. His wife, Taiya Herndon, aged 45, is also facing charges, specifically obstruction of justice, according to San Luis County Attorney Melissa Price Smith.

A 17-year-old female, identified as Wilson, was shot while driving to meet a friend at the San Luis Zoo. At least one bullet struck the rear of her vehicle, causing her to lose control and crash into a concrete highway wall.

The woman was transported to Barnes-Jewish Hospital, where medical personnel subsequently confirmed her death.

Surveillance footage obtained by researchers depicts a white Buick Enclave truck halting on the right shoulder of Interstate 170. Court records indicate that a suspect exited the vehicle from the passenger side, shortly followed by the sound of a gunshot.

Following the assault, the perpetrator re-entered the vehicle and the truck departed the scene.

Law enforcement officials traced the vehicle believed to be involved in the shooting to a nearby hotel where the Herndon family was staying. Upon investigation, a truck matching the description from surveillance footage was discovered at the hotel, although it was registered under a different license plate number.

Court records indicate that neither of the two vehicle registrations linked to the vehicle was found to be in the individual's name.

On October 16, Taiya Herndon was observed exiting the rear of a vehicle as police approached. Her husband, Willie Herndon, subsequently departed the vicinity of the hotel and began running towards the officers, before being apprehended shortly thereafter.

Prosecutors claim that Taiya Herndon assisted her husband in evading law enforcement by relocating him to Illinois following the incident.

A charge of obstructing judicial proceedings has been filed against the individual, who is accused of interfering with the legal process. Additional information regarding the transfer, including the route taken and the circumstances surrounding it, remains undisclosed by the authorities.

Court records reveal that Willie Herndon, a defendant in the case, has a history of prior convictions, including possession of a stolen vehicle, receipt of stolen property, and theft with robbery in two separate instances. Additionally, he faces charges related to possession of a firearm by an individual with a criminal background.

A man is being held in custody with a bail of $1 million, and his wife has been ordered to post a cash bail of $500,000, according to prosecutor Price Smith.

A preliminary investigation has yet to determine the motive behind the attack. According to Deputy Chief Jack Abell of the Major Case Squad Command Unit in the Greater St. Louis area, there is no established connection between the couple and the teenager involved.

At a press conference held on Monday, Robert Hickman, Alyssa's father, reflected on the aspirations his family had for her future.

Alyssa, who was 17 years old and full of enthusiasm for her life and future, was looking forward to celebrating a significant milestone - her 18th birthday - just 60 days away. Her family had also planned a special trip to Disney, where she was particularly excited to meet her idol, Princess Tiana. However, those plans were no longer possible.

The father of the individual involved expressed gratitude to the investigators, the FBI, and local authorities in Overland for their diligent efforts in resolving the matter.

Sergeant Michael Clymer, a spokesperson for the investigation unit, stated that while no arrest can restore Alyssa, the recent announcement is seen as a significant step towards holding those responsible accountable and upholding justice.

During the course of an investigation into the death of Wilson, officials found evidence of a separate incident that occurred on October 11, in which a vehicle was struck by gunfire after a white truck pulled over to the side of the road.

A shell casing discovered at the scene in San Luis was found to have originated from the same manufacturer as the shell casing linked to the murder of Wilson.

Further forensic analysis is underway to establish whether the two helmets were struck by the same firearm.

An ongoing investigation is working to determine the specifics surrounding the attack and identify any additional relevant information. The allegations against Willie and Taiya Herndon will be addressed through the judicial process.
