A woman pregnant with twins was seriously injured after being attacked by two dogs while walking to a relative's house in a residential complex in Topeka, Kansas.

The victim was identified as Audrey Suarez, 31, who was 24 weeks pregnant when the attack occurred on July 17, according to authorities.

According to Police, the incident occurred while a disturbance unrelated to the victim was taking place at the Highland Park Townhomes. During that episode, a minor linked to one of the people involved let the two dogs out, which later attacked Suarez.

She protected her abdomen to save her twins

The woman suffered serious injuries to her face while trying to protect the babies she was expecting.

Her partner, CJ Austin, explained that during the attack, Audrey instinctively covered her abdomen to prevent the animals from reaching the fetuses.

“She broke her little finger because the only thing she could think about was covering her stomach so the dogs wouldn't hurt the twins,” Austin told local media.

According to her testimony, the woman almost lost an eye due to injuries caused by one of the bites.

He required two surgeries after serious injuries

Austin said Suarez underwent a 10-hour facial reconstructive surgery to repair injuries caused by the attack.

In addition, doctors performed a second four-hour operation on one of his eyes, after a bite caused a laceration to his iris.

A witness intervened to help the woman while she was attacked. When officers arrived at the scene, one of the police officers shot one of the dogs, which died at the scene.

The second animal remains in quarantine under the custody of the authorities.

The dogs' owner received a summons

Police reported that the owner of the dogs received a citation for the incident.

However, Austin considers that this measure is insufficient given the severity of the injuries suffered by his partner.

"They changed his life completely. He will have scars forever," he said.

He also noted that Audrey continues to face psychological consequences after the attack.

“She wakes up in the middle of the night screaming, ‘Get off me.’ That has traumatized her,” he said.

Suarez's family members created a fundraising campaign to help cover medical expenses and support the expectant mother as she continues her recovery and prepares for the birth of her twins.
