He scored a goal, but it was disallowed and he was injured in the celebration: sequence in Brazil goes around the world
Jacy, a Coritiba player, was the protagonist of one of the most curious images in world football over the weekend
What should have been an unforgettable celebration ended up becoming one of the most striking images of the football weekend in Brazil. Jacy, captain of Coritiba, fell inside the locker room tunnel of the Couto Pereira stadium when he was trying to celebrate a goal in front of the fans during the match against Chapecoense for the Brazilian Championship.
The scene occurred on Saturday night and quickly began to circulate on social networks and sports media in different countries.
The defender had scored what seemed like his team's second goal and ran towards the stands behind the goal. He took the ball, placed it under his shirt and went to celebrate with the fans.
At the time of jumping over the billboard he did not notice that access to the visiting tunnel was open, since there were just a few minutes left before the break. The footballer disappeared from public view for a few seconds after falling inside the hallway.
Despite the severe scare, Jacy quickly returned to the grass, continued the celebration and knelt in front of the fans.
Coritiba doctors checked him out immediately. According to Brazilian media, he received attention to his lower back and remained holding his back for several moments.
The goal didn't count and the ankle said enough
The action ended up having an even more unexpected outcome. The VAR, through the semi-automatic offside system, detected an irregular position in the previous play and the referee annulled the goal.
Thus, the defender suffered an injury while celebrating a goal that ultimately did not go up on the scoreboard.
Jacy completed the first half and returned to the field after the break, but was barely able to play two more minutes. Discomfort in his right ankle forced him to ask for a change and he was replaced by Rodrigo Moledo.
At the end of the meeting, the captain explained what happened.
"I celebrated for my wife, because she's pregnant. And then, at that moment, I wanted to celebrate with the fans, but I hadn't even remembered that there was a grave there. When I jumped, you know when you dream that you fall off a building? It was something like that. So, when I stepped there, I ended up spraining my ankle. And then, when I was leaving, after the celebration, I even fell again because I was ecstatic."
The footballer added that he tried to continue in the game, although the pain became unbearable.
"Then it started to hurt a lot, it started to limit my ability to change direction. I even asked to go back, but it hurt too much, so I couldn't continue, but other than that, I'm fine."
A repeated episode in the same stadium
The player himself took the episode with humor.
"I know this is going to become a meme, right? It became a meme, it's going to go all over Brazil, even when I retire this meme will still exist."
The situation was reminiscent of a precedent that occurred in 2014 in the same stadium. During a match between Coritiba and Sao Paulo, Cameroonian forward Joel fell in that same tunnel while celebrating a goal.
The design of the Couto Pereira includes access to the locker room that usually remains closed during the game and opens near half-time, a circumstance that was decisive for Jacy's accident.
Coritiba ended up beating Chapecoense 2-1, but the result took a backseat to a sequence as unusual as it was viral.
