Health authorities have reported an increase to 101 confirmed cases of legionellosis, including four deaths, in central Harlem. The bacteria, linked to cooling towers, poses a serious public health concern.

The New York Department of Health confirmed the presence of Legionella bacteria in 12 cooling towers associated with 10 buildings, including NYC Health Hospitals/Harlem. To date, 11 towers have been repaired, with the last expected to be completed shortly. "This community outbreak is not related to the buildings' hot or cold water supply. Residents in these ZIP codes can continue to drink water, bathe, shower, cook, and use air conditioning," Acting Health Commissioner Michelle Morse said in a statement.

Legionnaires' disease, which can be fatal if left untreated, has symptoms such as cough, fever and difficulty breathing. Predispositions such as age and weak immune systems increase the likelihood of severe complications.
