Family of immigrant with Green Card detained by ICE reports he is battling a brain tumor
Paramjit Singh was arrested last July for a minor offense committed years ago and for which he “paid”
The family of Paramjit Singh, a permanent resident in the United States, warned that his health is deteriorating while he has been detained by ICE for more than three months. The man is battling a brain tumor and a heart condition that require constant attention.
Although his defense insists on his release on humanitarian grounds, the process remains stalled. His relatives say the situation “has become unbearable” and that each day in custody worsens his physical and emotional state.
Complaints about physical deterioration and detention conditions
According to The Independent, Singh's wife stated that her husband “is getting weaker by the day” inside the detention center. She recounted that he was kept in a cold room, without blankets or adequate clothing, while his luggage, including the medication he needs, was withheld. The family claims this worsened his neurological symptoms and weight loss.
According to his lawyer, Louis Angeles, Singh needed urgent surgery that was delayed due to the detention conditions. The lawyer described his arrest and subsequent treatment as “nothing short of horrific.” The family added that he only received adequate medical attention until September 17, after writing to Congressman Marlin Stutzman to request intervention.
How the case began: the arrest and the reason for the detention
According to The Independent, Singh was detained on July 30 at Chicago O'Hare Airport after returning from a trip to India. ICE argued that there was a 26-year conviction related to the misuse of a payphone at the family gas station, which he used without paying due to a misunderstanding. Although he served a 10-day jail sentence and paid a fine at the time, immigration authorities used that conviction as grounds for his detention.
According to official information cited by The Independent, ICE denied the allegations of inhumane conditions and stated that “comprehensive medical care is provided from the moment a detainee enters custody.”Spokespeople also defended the current immigration policy, arguing that it aims to keep “criminals and lawbreakers off the streets,” and insisting that Singh was detained in accordance with regulations.
Who is Paramjit Singh? His life in the US, status, and family roots
According to The Independent, Singh arrived in the United States in 1994, at the age of 22, with his father, who was already a US citizen. He has lived in the country for over 30 years and holds a Green Card. The family manages a chain of gas stations in Indiana, where Singh has worked for decades and has remained integrated into his community.
His wife, Lakhwinder Kaur, explained that Singh has traveled to India numerous times without encountering any immigration issues. She said the family speaks to him for only five minutes a day, and their son “cannot concentrate on his studies” due to the anxiety of his detention. “Sometimes he cries during those few minutes,” she said.
What can happen now with his case
According to media sources, the progress of the case will depend on the medical evaluation and whether a judge considers that Singh can be released for humanitarian reasons. His defense maintains that ICE is using tactics to “prolong his detention” despite knowing his delicate state of health. If there are no changes, Singh could remain in custody for additional weeks, with increasing risk to his tumor and his heart condition.
