Nepal's authorities are without news of 384 tourists, 291 of them foreigners, after a massive flood ravaged the border region with Tibet and left at least 55 dead on Wednesday.
In images shared by the Nepalese police, you can see a flooded river that bridges several houses in the Rasuwa district. The police also said there were “several officers who were out of contact.”
The number of victims was identified thanks to “a preliminary record, prepared by agencies and received from tourism and travel companies,” the Tourism Office said.
The flood hit Syabrubesi, the starting point of the popular Langtang hiking route, as well as other areas used by travelers for Hindu pilgrimage to Kailash Mansarovar.
A quake is suspected to have shaken the region and triggered an avalanche of ice and rock in the Lhende Khola River, which caused floods. Authorities have warned about the possibility of a second flood, as there is an obstruction of the river, which runs through both Nepal and Tibet.
Flood warnings have also been issued in the Indian states of Bihar and Uttar Pradesh, bordering Nepal, as several rivers descend from the Himalayas to their plains.
