The recent reported failures in water mains caused concern because they may show obsolete infrastructure in the city of Los Angeles.

In one week, municipal services received reports of at least five water main breaks in the metropolitan area, including the one that occurred on July 16 in West Hollywood, where a pipeline that had been in service since 1916 fractured and caused severe flooding.

The 36-inch (91-centimeter) pipe that broke in West Hollywood caused a leak of approximately 17 million gallons (64 million liters), which flooded the Sunset Strip, affecting businesses, apartment buildings and underground parking lots.
