Residents ask to declare Boyle Heights a disaster area
Neighbors demand that California Governor Gavin Newsom declare a disaster to allocate urgent help to remove rotting food
Boyle Heights residents are calling on California Governor Gavin Newsom to declare the Los Angeles neighborhood a disaster area, one month after the Lineage warehouse fire.
Millions of pounds of rotting food, attracting harmful wildlife to the area, make it unbearable for the residents of Boyle Heights to live with the stench, which is intensified by the extreme heat conditions that prevail this week in Los Angeles.
"It smells like death. There are flies, maggots, rats," said resident Bárbara Martínez outside the Church of the Resurrection in Boyle Heights, where a group of residents gathered Wednesday night to hold a vigil.
