The president of Mexico, Claudia Sheinbaum, revealed this Monday that she decided to attend the 2026 World Cup final in New York, in which Spain beat Argentina, after receiving a personal invitation from her American counterpart, Donald Trump, with whom she took advantage of the meeting to briefly address the review of the North American trade agreement.

"Until Friday, the only invitation I had received to go was from FIFA. And I was considering whether or not to go, but I had thought about not attending. And on Saturday we had a telephone conversation with Trump," he said during his press conference.

The Mexican president later specified that the call occurred on Friday and that was then when the US president asked her if she would travel to New York.

"And there he invited me personally. Claudia told me, are you coming? And I said: 'Well, if you invite me, President Trump'. 'Yes, you are invited, come, you're going to be sitting there next to us,' and then, I said: 'Well, we have to go,' because now, as the saying goes, politeness doesn't take away from bravery," he added.

The president noted that she initially purchased a direct commercial flight from Cancun (southern Mexico), where she was, but the trip was canceled due to the electrical storms that affected New York.

Given the lack of alternatives, he traveled on a plane from the Ministry of National Defense.

Already at the stadium, Sheinbaum noted that he spoke briefly with Trump, Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney, and US officials, including Secretary of State Marco Rubio, as well as representatives of the commercial area.

“There were really few moments, but we did have some opportunity to be able to comment on the commercial issue,” he stated.

The meeting coincided with the start this Tuesday of the second round of talks on the review of the Treaty between Mexico, the United States and Canada (T-MEC), a key negotiation for the three North American partners.

"This second round of talks on the review of the treaty begins. And we hope to be able to complete some agreements this week," said Sheinbaum, who announced that he will receive the US ambassador Jamieson Greer in Mexico City.

The president described the atmosphere as cordial and highlighted the coordination between the three countries organizing the World Cup.

Sheinbaum participated in the awards ceremony on Sunday, where he presented the Ballon d'Or to Spaniard Rodri, along with Trump, Carney and FIFA president Gianni Infantino.

Mexico hosted 13 matches of the tournament and became the first country to organize three World Cups, after the 1970 and 1986 editions. EFE
