An 11-year-old boy died after suffering serious injuries when he was struck by a falling tree while hiking on a trail at the Owasippe Scout Reservation, a Scouting America summer camp located in western Michigan.

The Muskegon County Sheriff's Office reported the crash occurred shortly after 5 p.m. m. on Thursday. Although authorities did not release the identity of the minor, they confirmed that he was a resident of River Forest, a town located west of Chicago, Illinois.

Emergency services attended the scene following the incident, but the child died as a result of his injuries.

Scouting America mourns the death of the minor

Scouting America confirmed the death on Friday in a statement noting that the child's parents have already been notified and that no other campers were injured.

The organization expressed being “deeply saddened” by what happened and sent its condolences to the minor's family, friends, fellow scouts and leaders.

“The safety and well-being of every young person who participates in our programs is our top priority,” the organization said.

Likewise, he reported that he is fully cooperating with the authorities during the investigation and that he will not offer more details out of respect for the family's privacy.

They provide support to the family and the Scout community

Scouting America said it is providing support to the boy's family, members of his Scout unit, camp staff and the community affected by the tragedy.

In a separate statement, the Michigan Crossroads Council of Scouting America assured that its camps continue to be safe spaces for participants.

Various Scout groups in the United States also expressed their condolences through social networks after learning of the death.

The oldest Scout camp in the United States

Owasippe Scout Reservation began operating in 1911 and is considered the oldest operating Scout camp in the United States.

The preserve belongs to Scouting America's Pathway to Adventure Council and encompasses more than 75 miles of natural areas.

Four camps operate in its facilities: Blackhawk, Wolverine, Reneker Family Camp and Cub/Arrow of Light Camp.

So far, the authorities have not specified which of these camps the minor participated in or the exact point of the reserve where the accident occurred.
