A West Virginia couple was arrested after authorities found a child and three dogs inside a home they described as “repulsive,” infested with insects and covered in trash, animal feces and other debris.

Dakota McIe, 23, and Ciarra Lacey, 22, face charges of child neglect and animal abuse, according to authorities.

The investigation began on August 5, when a concerned person gave police a video showing the conditions inside the home.

According to records reviewed by local media, the house was covered in trash and debris, including animal feces and human vomit. Part of the waste was found near the place where the minor slept.

The house was infested with flies.

Authorities described the conditions at the residence as extremely unsanitary.

In the kitchen there were large numbers of flies around rotting food and accumulated garbage. The smell inside the home made the person who provided the video to investigators nauseous.

Records also indicate that the home did not have air conditioning and that part of the bathroom could not be used.

The conditions were considered serious enough for authorities to intervene to protect both the minor and the animals.

Three dogs were locked up with no food or water visible

Investigators also found three dogs locked in cages that Upshur County Sheriff's Office deputies said gave off a strong odor of urine.

The animals apparently had no visible food or water.

Given the situation, the authorities requested the intervention of animal control to remove the dogs from the home.

The case was also referred to Child Protective Services, which intervened to ensure the child's safety.

The child was placed in the custody of a family member.

Lacey remains in custody at Tygart Valley Regional Bail, with bail set at $30,000 cash.

McIe, for his part, was released on August 11 after posting $5,000 bail.
