Florida Governor Ron DeSantis rescinded a death warrant for a prisoner who has been on death row since 1978, at the conclusion of his tenure as governor.

Florida State Prison Director Randall Polk reportedly received a letter allegedly signed by a Republican president, instructing him to stay the execution of William Lee Thompson, a 74-year-old inmate who was sentenced to death for a brutal murder committed nearly five decades ago.

Florida Governor DeSantis had placed a temporary hold on the execution in September, following a review of reports submitted by the defendant's lawyers that raised concerns about his mental capacity and potential dementia diagnosis.

The Supreme Court has established that an individual who lacks a rational comprehension of the reasons behind their impending execution cannot be subject to capital punishment.

A panel of three psychiatrists was instructed to conduct a comprehensive evaluation of the individual in question.

On March 1976, a violent assault occurred at the Sunny Isles Motel, situated at 16375 Biscayne Boulevard in North Miami Beach. The victims were 23-year-old Sally Ivester, who tragically lost her life, and her attacker, Rocco James Surace, 30, who was accompanied by William Lee Thompson, 23.

Florida Governor Ron DeSantis has withdrawn the execution warrant for William "Bill" Thompson.

Autopsy results revealed evidence of severe physical abuse, including sexual assault and burn marks caused by cigarette embers, on the victim's body.

Thompson and Surace devised a trap that would have resulted in a 203-year prison sentence for Surace. However, in 1993, Surace died in his cell before he could be released from his sentence.

William Lee Thompson was ultimately given a death sentence.

As the execution date drew near, the defense team sought a professional evaluation from Robert Ouaou, a neuropsychologist from Naples, who concluded that the prisoner exhibited symptoms of dementia and significant cognitive impairment.

The circumstances surrounding the decision to temporarily halt the execution remain unclear, including whether they may have played a role in Governor Ron DeSantis's actions.

Florida has consistently ranked as the state with the highest number of annual executions, with a total of 16 executions carried out to date.
