New York state authorities confirmed the death of Harbe Nagi, a seven-year-old boy with autism who had disappeared while attending a family gathering in the town of Menands.

The minor, nephew of Hamtramck Mayor Adam Alharbi, was found dead Tuesday morning in the backyard pool of a neighboring home, WTEN-TV reported.

Menands Police reported that the cause of death was accidental drowning and noted that the investigation into the circumstances of the incident remains open.

The pool had been inspected during the search

Harbe, who was non-verbal, was last seen Sunday in the Park Drive area. Investigators believe he wandered away from a family gathering.

According to his family, the boy had a history of wandering away unsupervised and showed a marked interest in nature, especially water.

Lieutenant Kevin Schwebke, of the Menands Police, explained that the pool where he was finally located had been inspected several times during the search efforts. However, visibility was reduced because the water was cloudy and rescuers were unable to detect the body until it surfaced.

The authorities indicated that there are no indications that a crime has been committed or evidence of the participation of third parties in the disappearance.

The family had offered a reward

During the search, relatives offered a $10,000 reward for information leading to finding the minor alive.

Mayor Adam Alharbi had explained that his nephew had already tried to leave the house on other occasions due to his condition.

After the death was confirmed, the mayor published a message on social networks in which he expressed the family's pain.

"We are devastated to share that he was found dead. Thank you to everyone who helped in the search," he wrote.

Later, he also thanked the expressions of solidarity received.

"I want to sincerely thank all the love, prayers and condolences we have received during this very difficult time. Your support has been a great strength for our family," he said.

The boy's funeral is scheduled to be held in the town of Latham, in the state of New York.
