The Department of National Security (DHS) has ruled out an amnesty for immigrants without legal status based in the United States and anticipates an increase in the number of deportations.
The hardening of the position taken by the DHS arose in response to statements by Florida congresswoman María Elvira Salazar, warning President Donald Trump that many Latinos feel betrayed by their migration policy and, in the same way they supported him with their vote, could give back to the Republican Party on the ballot.
“President, some of your efforts to implement immigration have gone too far. and [...] The same Hispanics who helped him get to the White House in 2024 feel betrayed today,” she said in a campaign message posted on social media.
In fact, the Cuban-American criticised that in July, the Immigration and Customs Control Service (ICE) and the Customs and Border Protection Office (CBP) had detained 50,000 people with no criminal background and asked Trump to take into account that his anti-immigration policy could mean a high price to the Republican Party in the mid-term elections.
“You are the only one who can solve this problem that has dragged the country for 40 years. I’m not talking about giving them amnesty but giving them a dignified life in this promised land and only you can do so,” he said.

Through a statement, the DHS strongly ruled out that it would modify its approach to removing from U.S. territory those who do not have documentation supporting their stay.
