The execution of Christa Pike in Tennessee ended in a scene that journalists described as something they had never witnessed. The 50-year-old woman survived two doses of the lethal injection and, during the procedure, came to raise her head to ask if the pain she felt was normal.

The incident took place at the Highest Security Institution in Riverbend, Nashville. Pike was scheduled to become the first woman executed by Tennessee in more than 200 years, but the application of pentobarbital, the drug used in the procedure, did not end her life.

According to New York Post reports, journalists who witnessed the execution told what happened inside the camera.

Catherine Sweeney, WPLN reporter, explained after the execution that Pike received two doses and continued to breathe.

"At a certain point, he raised his head and looked around him, said he felt a burning and pain in an area and asked if that was normal," Sweeney said.

The reporter added a phrase that summed up the impression of the witnesses: “Nothing of that was normal.”

Another present reporter, WKRN’s Tori Gessner, said she heard Pike complain about a severe pain in the arm.

“I feel that my arm is going to blow up.There’s a point that palps me very much,” Pike would have said, according to the testimony collected by American media.

Witnesses also noted that Pike continued to breathe after both doses were administered. Even sounds from the execution camera were heard while they were staying in the observation room.

After the procedure was suspended, Pike was taken to a hospital to receive medical care. Her lawyers said “measures were being taken to save her life.”

Pike’s state of health was not entirely clear on Thursday morning. Dr. Joel Zivot, a professor at the Emory University School of Medicine and hired by his legal team as an expert, told the BBC he may have suffered a brain injury due to a delay in the start of the resuscitation.

“It’s very possible that, as a result of delayed resuscitation, he will suffer a brain injury,” Zivot told the BBC.

The execution of Pike occurred after a day of judicial decisions. The U.S. Supreme Court finally allowed Tennessee to carry out the procedure.

Following the failure of the execution, Tennessee Governor Bill Lee suspended the remaining executions scheduled for 2026 and ordered an independent review to determine what happened.

Pike was sentenced to death for the murder of Colleen Slemmer in 1995.She was 18 when she committed the crime and was around three decades in the death hallway.

State investigation will now have to determine why two doses of the lethal injection did not cause his death and what happened during the procedure.
