The British interpreter surprised the public with a subtle and ingenious reference to the recent marriage of his ex-boyfriend, Taylor Swift, with NFL player Travis Kelce, who married on July 3 on the same emblematic New York scene.
At the closing of his Saturday presentation, Styles addressed the crowd to praise the headquarters that houses his 30 concert series. “We are at Madison Square Garden, home to the world champions, the New York Knicks!” he proclaimed.
Acts followed, and with the smile that characterizes it, he added: “And here they also do weddings,” unleashing the ovation and hysteria of thousands of fans present.
The direct reference did not go unnoticed. The pop star and sportsman’s wedding was a private event but filled with high-profile figures, such as Selena Gomez, Bradley Cooper, Jack Antonoff and actress Zoë Kravitz, Styles’ current couple.
Although the former One Direction member was invited to the ceremony, his own tour commitments prevented him from attending. Even so, the British had already had a gesture towards the link on July 3 during his show at the Wembley Stadium in London, where he played “Two Ghosts”, a theme widely linked by fans with his story with Swift.
The romance between the two singers, occurring between late 2012 and early 2013, left a mark on pop culture and served as inspiration for hits such as “Style”, from the album “1989”. More than a decade after that engagement, Styles’ heartfelt gesture demonstrates the maturity with which both artists handle their common past.
The show on Saturday is part of the U.S. section of his tour “Together, Together”, which has the New York area as its only stop in the country and where the artist has taken advantage of to pay tribute to great musical icons.
