The Los Angeles District Prosecutor’s Office announced on Tuesday that it will not apply for the death penalty against Nick Reiner, accused of the murder of his parents, filmmaker and actor Rob Reiner and photographer and producer Michele Singer Reiner.
After conducting an exhaustive review of the evidence and consulting the families of the victims, the public ministry determined that the maximum sentence it will seek during the trial will be life imprisonment without the possibility of conditional freedom.
California City District Attorney Nathan Hochman explained at a press conference at the court’s doorstep that the decision was made after thoroughly assessing both the aggravating and mitigating factors of the case.
“After a careful and thorough review of all these factors, the district prosecutor’s office will not apply for the death penalty in this case,” Hochman told the media.
Although the prosecutor did not specify the exact content of the talks with the neighbors, he emphasized the transcendence of his position in the final resolution. “We talked to Nick Reiner’s brothers and they made their position very clear. We took their views into account when finally deciding not to apply for the death penalty," Hochman said.
Both Rob Reiner and his wife were publicly recognized for their opposition to the death penalty.
The case dates back to December 14, 2025, when a massager attending a scheduled date at the Brentwood family home did not get a response when she knocked on the door. After alerting Romy Reiner, daughter of the marriage, she went to the property and found her father’s bleeding body. Minutes later, emergency teams also located his mother’s body. Both were deadly stabbed.
Nick Reiner, 33, was arrested hours later by police officers near the University of Southern California. Accused of a double murder in the first degree with the aggravants of wreckage or embuscade, the accused declared himself not guilty.
People close to the family noted that the young man suffered from severe drug addiction problems andined a volatile behavior with his parents.
The judgment was announced just hours after actress Jamie Lee Curtis paid a posthumous tribute to Rob Reiner during the Emmy Awards gala.
