Election officials in California celebrated this Monday the Supreme Court ruling that validates the process of accepting mail-in ballots that arrive a certain number of days after a voting day.

The court's 5-4 ruling rejected an attempt to challenge the laws of more than half of the states, including California, that allow mail-in ballots that arrive after Election Day to be counted, as long as they are postmarked on or before that day.

At stake in the Supreme Court's decision were election rules for upcoming midterm elections in California and about two dozen other states that offer more flexible voting deadlines.
