The Democratic Party took a key step towards the 2028 presidential elections by recommending that South Carolina be the first state to hold primaries to elect its candidate for the White House.

The proposal was approved this Friday by the Rules and Bylaws Committee of the Democratic National Committee (DNC) and must now be ratified by the full party during its summer meeting next month in Austin, Texas.

The decision represents new support for the southern state, which has already inaugurated the Democratic primary calendar in 2024 at the urging of then-President Joe Biden, who argued that South Carolina better reflected the diversity of the Democratic electorate than the traditional first states.

South Carolina beats Nevada

According to The New York Times, the vote was close: South Carolina received 26 votes, Nevada received 19 and New Hampshire just four.

The debate revealed different visions about which state should be in charge of opening the presidential race. While South Carolina defended the weight of its African-American electorate, Nevada argued that it more accurately represents the diverse coalition Democrats need to regain to win the presidency again.

“The South is not the past, it is the future,” said Christiel Spain, president of the South Carolina Democratic Party, during her speech before the committee.

For his part, Daniele Monroe-Moreno, Democratic leader in Nevada, maintained that his state concentrates sectors that are essential for the future of the party, such as Latinos, workers, independent voters and Asian-American communities.

“My state, Nevada, represents the coalition we need to recover,” he said, according to CBS News.

The calendar is not yet defined

In addition to provisionally placing South Carolina in first place, the committee preliminarily approved that New Hampshire, Michigan and Nevada be part of the group of states that will vote before Super Tuesday.

However, the calendar is not yet closed. The party is analyzing incorporating up to two additional states into this initial bloc and has yet to resolve the conflict with New Hampshire, whose state legislation requires holding the first primaries in the country, a situation that has already caused tensions during the 2024 electoral process.
