Maura Healey, governor of Massachusetts, signed a bill through which the restriction on abortion from 24 weeks of gestation is eliminated, which makes the entity the eleventh to assume such a position at the national level.

After being ratified in the state House of Representatives late last month by a vote of 119 in favor and 33 against, with all Republicans and nine Democrats voting against it, the bill passed the Legislature and then the Senate approved it by a vote of 15 in favor and 4 against.

Previously, state law permitted abortion during 24 weeks of pregnancy if a doctor deemed it necessary to preserve the life, physical or mental health of the woman, due to a lethal fetal anomaly or diagnosis, or because the fetus was unlikely to survive outside the womb.

However, thanks to the signed bill, an elective late-term abortion could now be performed according to the professional judgment of the doctor performing it.

Healey and supporters of the controversial bill that has been given the green light maintain that the change in the law was necessary because Massachusetts hospitals were increasingly refusing to perform abortions on women who were eligible for abortions after 24 weeks.

The argument was that they needed a clear and precise authority to reaffirm the medical criteria for late-term abortions.

During a press conference held at the Massachusetts Capitol, surrounded by legislators and activists, Democrat Healey explained the reason for supporting with her signature the adjustment that legalizes late-term abortion.

"We have heard many stories full of pain, anguish, suffering and trauma. Stories about the worst moments of a person's life, of a couple's life," he indicated, establishing that the project will come into force in 90 days, since his administration is committed to providing its residents with access to medical care, regardless of what "President Donald Trump, the Republicans in Congress or the Supreme Court" may point out.

Through a statement, Marjorie Dannenfelser, president of the pro-life organization SBA Pro-Life America, exploded against the governor of Massachusetts.

"It should be outrageous that tens of thousands of unborn Americans are brutally dismembered limb from limb each year. Unfortunately, that number will only increase with Governor Healey's passage of the bill allowing abortion up to birth," he wrote.
