Given the refusal of the Brazilian government to grant visas to two US diplomats who last month intended to visit the South American nation prior to the upcoming elections and in retaliation for the delay in approving President Donald Trump's candidate as a possible ambassador in Brasilia, US authorities revoked the visa of María Luiza Ribeiro Viotti, Brazilian ambassador in Washington.

The State Department accepted that the controversial measure is in reciprocity to the lack of diplomacy shown by the administration headed by President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.

However, it is highlighted that the political decision implemented could be reversed as soon as the ambassador appointed by the New York magnate is confirmed by Brazil.

On July 20, the US government requested visas for the two officials who intended to visit Brazil to discuss issues of “freedom of expression related to the elections” with electoral authorities, but the request was rejected.

In fact, the relationship between Trump and Lula da Silva has been straining for months because Brazil has increased its trade volumes with the BRICS group, which is in opposition to the policy implemented by Washington.
