Trump assures that Iran will pay the consequences for delaying a negotiation
Tension escalates after new attacks and as Tehran reconsiders negotiations with Washington
US President Donald Trump assured this Wednesday that Iran missed the opportunity to reach an agreement with Washington and warned that it will now have to face the consequences of that decision.
“Iran only talks and does not act,” the president wrote on his social network Truth Social, after Iranian authorities reported that they will review the continuity of negotiations with the United States after the recent military confrontations.
Trump raised the tone of his statements by stating that Tehran took too long to negotiate an agreement that, according to him, would have been beneficial for the country.
“They have taken too long to negotiate an agreement that would have benefited them enormously, now they will have to pay the consequences!” said the US president.
The military escalation complicates the diplomatic route
The statements come amid a deteriorating situation in the Middle East. Tuesday night was considered the most intense since the ceasefire established on April 8, after US forces launched attacks against several targets in southern Iran.
The offensive was presented by Washington as a response to the alleged downing of a US military helicopter in the Strait of Hormuz.
Iran subsequently responded with attacks against 21 US military targets in different parts of the Middle East, including Jordan, Kuwait and Bahrain, although that version was rejected by US authorities.
Given this scenario, the spokesman for the Iranian Foreign Ministry, Ismail Bagaei, stated that Tehran will review the future of negotiations with Washington.
“The diplomatic process does not develop in a vacuum,” declared the official, pointing out that to advance any agreement it is necessary to have minimum conditions of stability.
Trump also maintained that Iranian military capabilities have been severely affected by recent operations and assured that the naval blockade imposed by the United States in the area is one of the most effective in history.
Meanwhile, Iranian authorities reported that the US attacks destroyed civilian infrastructure, including communication towers and two desalination plants in the Sirik region, leaving some 20,000 people without access to drinking water.
