A worker died in the construction of the new Camp Nou, confirmed by FC Barcelona
The worker would have died as a result of a blow suffered while carrying out his duties at the stadium works.
FC Barcelona confirmed the death of a worker who was participating in the remodeling works at the Spotify Camp Nou, in the first work accident with fatal consequences since the stadium reconstruction work began in June 2023.
The victim, a 54-year-old worker, lost his life last Friday while working at the sports venue, according to authorities. The club publicly expressed its condolences and assured that it will accompany the worker's family after what happened.
Through a statement, the Barça institution "deeply" regretted the death of the employee and expressed its "deepest condolences and conveyed all its support and affection to his family, his friends and his colleagues."
Likewise, Barcelona indicated that its president, Joan Laporta, wishes to personally convey his condolences to the family members and make himself available on behalf of the entire entity.
Authorities investigate the accident that occurred at the stadium
According to the information released by the Mossos d'Esquadra, the worker would have died as a result of a blow suffered while carrying out his duties in the construction of the new Camp Nou.
After receiving notification of the work accident, several police units, including members of the Investigation Unit, went to the scene along with personnel from the Medical Emergency System (SEM). However, the displaced teams could not do anything to save the worker's life.
The authorities did not offer more details about the circumstances under which the accident occurred, while the corresponding actions continue after the incident.
The death represents the first fatal accident recorded since the comprehensive remodeling of the stadium began, a project that officially began on June 1, 2023 and that has mobilized thousands of workers during its development.
More than three years of works to transform the Barcelona stadium
Since the beginning of the reconstruction, the project has progressed in different phases to modernize the Camp Nou. Recently, the work allowed the structure of the new third stand to be completed, while currently efforts are concentrated, among other tasks, on the installation of the compression ring that will support the stadium roof.
The remodeling has required the participation of thousands of employees and remains active every day with the aim of accelerating the completion of the facility.
During this process, different episodes unrelated to the fatal accident that occurred on Friday have also been recorded. In more than three years of work, conflictive situations have occurred, including a fight, as well as complaints made by both residents of the area and the workers themselves.
According to the information available, the majority of employees participating in the works are of Romanian and Albanian origin.
The death of the worker marks a precedent in a project that, until now, had not recorded fatal workplace accidents since the start of the remodeling of the Barcelona stadium. While the investigations into what happened continue, FC Barcelona reiterated its support for the victim's family, friends and colleagues at this time, just over a month after his LaLiga debut at home.
