Donald Trump would be planning to dismiss the federal prosecutor for the District of Columbia, Jeanine Pirro, after her office dropped charges against former Olympian David Hearn for the alleged vandalism of the Reflecting Pond located in front of the Lincoln Memorial, a case that ended up publicly contradicting the version held by the administration itself about the origin of the damage.

According to CNN, the president is “furious” with the Prosecutor's Office's decision and considers it “highly probable” to remove Pirro from office. A senior administration official stated that the president was unaware that the prosecutor would present a document to withdraw from the criminal process and that the decision took him by surprise.

Last Friday, Pirro's office asked the court to dismiss the case against Hearn after receiving new documentation from the Department of the Interior that concluded that the deterioration of the pond liner was due to poor installation by contractor Atlantic Industrial Coatings and not vandalism. The court document also indicates that the work was carried out quickly to conclude before the celebrations of the 250th anniversary of the independence of the United States, on July 4.

The decision represented a 180-degree turn with respect to the position that the Prosecutor's Office itself had maintained weeks before. In July, Pirro announced an indictment against Hearn for destruction of federal property, a crime that could lead to up to 10 years in prison. He then assured that there was “conclusive evidence” and stated that the former athlete had deliberately torn off part of the pond lining.

Hearn, a former member of the Olympic canoe team, has always denied the allegations. He explained that he only touched a fragment of the material that was already detached while he was touring the place by bicycle and maintained that he never ripped off or destroyed any part of the structure. After reviewing the evidence, the Department of Justice concluded that the main cause of the deterioration was poor execution of the renovation.

The judicial rectification clashed head-on with the president's speech, who for weeks attributed the deterioration of the pond to acts of vandalism and demanded exemplary sanctions for those responsible. On Saturday, Trump posted a message on Truth Social in which he openly criticized the prosecutor.

"I do not agree at all with Jeanine Pirro, the US Attorney for the District of Columbia, regarding the pond. What was I thinking? There may have been some difficulty with the contractors, but the main damage was caused by vandals," he wrote.

This Monday, during a meeting with journalists in the Oval Office, the president avoided confirming whether he will fire Pirro, although he once again questioned his actions.

"Frankly, I think she was blocked, because the judge was really relentless. Instead of attacking those responsible for the events, the judge attacked her and her Department, and I guess she couldn't take the pressure," he declared. In addition, he assured that the Reflecting Pond “will be repaired and reopened within two weeks.”
