Donald Trump assured this Wednesday that he will continue to push for a diplomatic solution with Iran, after meeting at the White House with the Prime Minister of Israel, Benjamin Netanyahu, in a meeting that was held completely behind closed doors.

According to Trump explained on the Truth Social platform that during the meeting, which he described as "very positive" and which lasted approximately three hours, he made it clear to Netanyahu that his preference is to reach a negotiated agreement to limit Iran's nuclear program. "Nothing definitive was agreed upon, except that I insisted that negotiations with Iran continue to see if a deal can be reached," the president wrote. He added that if a deal is reached, that will be his preferred option; otherwise, "we will simply have to see what the outcome is." Trump also recalled that last year Iran decided not to move forward with an agreement and that the United States responded with "Operation Midnight Hammer," in which it bombed three Iranian nuclear facilities. "Hopefully this time they will be more reasonable and responsible," he stated. For his part, Netanyahu's office reported in a statement that both leaders discussed the negotiations with Iran, the situation in Gaza, and other regional developments. Furthermore, they noted that the prime minister outlined Israel's security needs in the context of the talks and that both agreed to maintain close coordination. Netanyahu arrived in Washington on Tuesday for his seventh official visit since the start of Trump's second term. The trip is focused on the process of reaching a new nuclear agreement between the United States and Iran. Thus, the Israeli prime minister signed his accession to the Peace Board created by Donald Trump on Wednesday during his official visit to Washington. Netanyahu signed the document during a meeting with Secretary of State Marco Rubio at Blair House, the official residence where he is staying, before going to the White House to meet with Trump.

Israel demands that Iran not only limit its uranium enrichment, but also reduces its ballistic missile program and cease support for militias in the region, such as Hezbollah. Tehran, however, rejects these conditions and has indicated that it will only accept certain restrictions on its nuclear program in exchange for relief from international sanctions.

Negotiations between Washington and Tehran resumed last week, after months of tensions and after Trump warned that there could be a military intervention if an agreement is not reached. In that context, the United States has deployed a fleet in waters near Iran, led by the carrier aircraft USS Abraham Lincoln.
