The confirmation of Todd Blanche as attorney general of the United States once again became a point of clash within the Republican Party. President Donald Trump hardened his stance this Saturday by warning that, if the Senate keeps the nomination blocked, he will leave Blanche as acting attorney general and seek to revive a controversial compensation fund of almost $1.8 billion.

Trump increases pressure on the Senate

Through Truth Social, the president directed his criticism at Republican Senators John Cornyn, of Texas, and Thom Tillis, of North Carolina, who have delayed the vote to confirm Blanche permanently.

“If Senators Cornyn and Tillis (…) are not going to approve Todd Blanche (…), then I will keep Todd as Acting Attorney General and will push hard to pass the anti-militarization bill,” Trump wrote.

The so-called “anti-militarization fund” was announced in May as part of a settlement related to Trump's lawsuit against the IRS and the Treasury Department. The proposal contemplates a purse close to $1.8 billion to compensate people who claim to have been politically persecuted.

The vote is approaching

During his confirmation hearing, Todd Blanche had assured that said fund was “dead,” although Senator John Cornyn responded that any modification had to be formally written between all parties involved.

As negotiations continue, the Senate Judiciary Committee confirmed that the vote on Blanche's nomination will take place this Tuesday, with the intention of resolving the process before the August legislative recess.

In a statement, the committee said that Chairman Chuck Grassley seeks to have the lawyer confirmed as soon as possible because he believes he has a solid record in security and law enforcement.

The dispute reflects the internal differences between Republicans regarding one of the most relevant appointments of Donald Trump's second term, the outcome of which could be defined in the coming days.
