Arrest warrant issued for Gervonta Davis: WBA champion returns to the center of controversy
American boxer faces charges of domestic violence, unlawful detention and attempted kidnapping after alleged incident in Miami Gardens
Gervonta “Tank” Davis, WBA lightweight world champion, is once again making headlines outside the ring. Authorities in Miami Gardens have issued an arrest warrant for the American boxer in connection with an alleged domestic violence incident that occurred in October.
Arrest warrant issued for Gervonta Davis
The warrant was issued on charges including false imprisonment, assault, and attempted kidnapping, local authorities confirmed. The incident allegedly occurred on October 27 at a Miami Gardens nightclub.
During a press conference held on Wednesday, Miami Gardens Police Executive Officer Emmanuel Jeanty reported that the department is working in conjunction with the US Marshals Service Fugitive Task Force to locate Gervonta Davis.
Complaint filed by his ex-girlfriend
Days after the alleged incident, the boxer's ex-girlfriend, Courtney Rossell, filed a civil lawsuit. The document, obtained by ESPN, states that Davis entered the nightclub where Rossell worked as a VIP waitress and allegedly assaulted her in a back room without security cameras. According to the complaint, the boxer grabbed her by the back of the head with one hand and held her by the throat with the other, dragging her down a staircase, through the kitchen, and out the back exit of the establishment, before physically assaulting her in the parking lot. Davis then allegedly released her, leaving her with her coworkers. The victim had bruises on his left arm.
Security camera footage supports the victim's account
Miami Gardens police confirmed they reviewed the club's security camera footage, which corroborates the complainant's account, reinforcing the allegations included in the civil lawsuit.
The victim stated that she had known Davis since 2022 and had a romantic relationship with the boxer for approximately five months, which ended a month before the incident.
Impact on his career and canceled fight
The lawsuit was filed two weeks before Gervonta “Tank” Davis was scheduled to face Jake Paul at the Kaseya Center in Miami. However, Davis was pulled from the fight, and Paul ultimately faced Anthony Joshua in December.
Gervonta Davis's legal history
This case adds to a series of legal issues that have plagued the WBA champion's career. Davis has previously faced charges related to domestic violence and fleeing the scene of a car accident. Although several of those cases were dismissed, in 2023 he was sentenced to 90 days of house arrest and three years of probation for a hit-and-run case in Baltimore. Gervonta Davis's sporting and legal future is now under scrutiny as authorities intensify their search and the boxing world closely follows the development of this new episode.
