Heat wave: how to clean an air conditioner so that it works well
A clean air conditioner cools better during a heat wave, consumes less energy and helps reduce the presence of mold and allergens.
When temperatures soar due to a heat wave, exceeding 40° C (104° F), the air conditioner becomes a vital appliance. In order for it to work properly and keep you in pleasant condition, you must learn how to clean it.
If you allow dirt to accumulate, not only does it lose its cooling capacity, but it can consume more electricity and encourage the accumulation of dust, bacteria, mold and other allergens in the environment.

This is how you should clean an air conditioner in the middle of a heat wave
Start with filters
The first step is to disconnect the equipment from the electrical current, which is essential to avoid accidents. Next, the front cover must be opened to remove the filters.
To wash them, it is advisable to use warm water and a mild detergent, carefully removing dirt with a sponge. Then let them dry completely before replacing them, since if they are wet, mold will appear.
Follow the evaporator
Now continue with the evaporator that is behind the filter. You should use a vacuum cleaner with a brush to remove dust and other traces of dirt. If necessary, apply a mild detergent with a spray bottle and remove residue with clean water.
It's time for unity
Next, and with the help of a hose or damp cloth, clean the outside of the unit, where leaves, dirt and other debris from the condenser could accumulate.
Don't worry about getting too wet, because these devices are capable of receiving water when cleaning. However, remember that it must dry completely afterwards.
Finish with drain pan
Clean the drain pan to prevent stagnant water from becoming a source of microorganisms. To do this, use a damp cloth and make sure it is not clogged.
Before reassembling the entire air conditioner, make sure all parts are completely dry. When you plug in the air conditioner and turn it on, check that it runs smoothly for a few minutes.
Cleaning the air conditioning filters every two or three weeks will help you maintain general maintenance of the equipment for longer. You should also take care of the space around it and check it periodically, which protects the device and the air you breathe.
