The football crisis of River Plate in Argentina added a new chapter this Saturday with the 1-0 defeat against Tigre as a visitor, a result that deepened the club's worst streak in decades and left the team without points and without goals after four days of the Clausura Tournament in that country, despite the arrival of Ángel Correa.

Ignacio Russo scored the only goal of the match 33 minutes into the second half and sealed a victory that once again hit the team led by Eduardo Coudet.

The setback extended the consecutive defeats of the semester to five among all competitions and raised the sequence to six if the Apertura final against Belgrano and the loss against Aldosivi for the Argentine Cup are counted.

The recent arrival of world champions such as Ángel Correa and Thiago Almada has not yet managed to modify the dynamics of a team that continues without scoring goals in the championship.

River is last in Zone B with zero points, while Argentinos Juniors and Barracas Central lead the group with nine points.

Sterile domain and an unprecedented statistic

The development of the match reflected a good part of the Millionaire's moment. River monopolized nearly 80 percent of the possession, created a clear chance that ended up being canceled due to a minimal offside, and hit the post with a free kick.

Tigre, with much less time on the ball, took advantage of one of his arrivals to convert and also had a clear one-on-one that ended up going wide.

The defeat left an unprecedented mark in the history of the institution: it is the first time that River lost the first four games of a First Division tournament without scoring a single goal.

The closest precedent of such a negative start dates back to the Second Division of 1906, although in that campaign the team had managed to score.

The string of adverse results also cut a broader historical barrier. River had not accumulated five consecutive defeats in all competitions since 1982, when under the leadership of José Manuel Vázquez they lost against Flamengo, Newell's, Peñarol, Argentinos Juniors and again Flamengo.

Reinforcements without effect and increasing pressure

The match against Tigre was also marked by the first games of Nicolás Otamendi and Ángel Correa, important additions for the club's winter market.

None of the debuts were enough to reverse the trend of a team that continues to show difficulties in transforming its possession into situations of real danger.

The negative sequence began to take shape in the Apertura final, continued with the elimination against Aldosivi for the Argentine Cup and deepened with the defeats against Barracas Central, Gimnasia, Rosario Central and Tigre.

River will now face a key match in the round of 16 of the Copa Sudamericana. Next Wednesday they will visit Independiente Santa Fe in Bogotá for the first leg, in a context of strong sporting pressure and with the urgent need to end a streak that already occupies a prominent place among the worst in its recent history.
