Major League Soccer will have a new chapter in the career of Hirving “Chucky” Lozano. The Los Angeles Galaxy confirmed this Friday the incorporation of the Mexican forward from San Diego FC through a loan that will extend until December 2026 and will include a definitive purchase option.

The operation puts an end to the attacker's brief spell in San Diego, a club from which he was sidelined due to internal tensions and with which he sought a way out to regain continuity.

San Diego sports director Tyler Heaps explained that the agreement was worked on together with the footballer and his entourage with the aim of facilitating his return to official competition. “We worked with Hirving and his environment to find the right opportunity that would allow him to have minutes on the field again,” said the manager. “We appreciate his contributions during our record-breaking inaugural season and wish him the best as he continues his career.”

Lozano will join the Galaxy as a Designated Player and will occupy an important position within the Los Angeles club's sports project.

From Los Angeles they highlighted that the Mexican was a long-standing target. Galaxy general manager Will Kuntz recalled that the club had already tried to sign him three years ago and described the operation as a “full circle.”

“Hirving is a player we tried to bring in three years ago, so this feels like a full circle moment,” Kuntz said. “He is a fierce competitor with an excellent track record of performance on teams that have challenged for titles in multiple leagues.”

The leader added that the club considers Lozano the right player to face the final stretch of the season and stressed that the locker room has a solid group and a clear objective for the last 15 games of the calendar.

The 31-year-old forward arrives after playing one season with San Diego FC, where he participated in 34 official matches and registered 11 goals and nine assists. The club reached the Western Conference final in its inaugural 2025 campaign.

An international tour before returning to California

Lozano's career includes spells at Pachuca, PSV Eindhoven and Napoli. With the Mexican club he scored 43 goals and distributed 31 assists in 149 games, in addition to winning the 2016 Clausura and the 2016-17 Concacaf Champions League, a tournament in which he was top scorer with eight goals.

In Europe he shined first with PSV, where he won the 2017-18 Eredivisie, and later with Napoli, a team with which he scored 30 goals in 155 games and was part of the 2022-23 Scudetto champion team. He returned to PSV in 2023 and added two consecutive league titles in 2023-24 and 2024-25.

He made his debut with the Mexican team in 2016 and has more than 70 caps. One of the most memorable moments of his career was the goal against Germany in the 2018 World Cup in Russia. He also played in the 2016 Copa América, the 2017 Confederations Cup, the 2021 Gold Cup and the 2018 and 2022 World Cups.

The arrival to the Los Angeles Galaxy represents the second Californian team of his career in the MLS and a new opportunity to relaunch his prominence in American soccer.
