Retailers are bracing for significantly higher delivery costs this December, as the surge in diesel prices is expected to be compounded by a recent increase in fuel tariffs.

The current diesel price stands at $6.34 per gallon, as reported by the American Automobile Association (AAA). Meanwhile, the TD Cowen/AFS freight shipping index indicates a 5.8% increase in land shipping costs compared to the same period last year.

Mingshu Bates, director of analysis at AFS Logistics, emphasized that fuel remains a top priority for all parties, with no positive developments to report.

A recent escalation in global energy prices is largely attributed to the ongoing conflict in the Middle East, which began in late February between the United States, Israel, and Iran. The resulting closure of the Strait of Hormuz, a critical waterway through which approximately 20% of the world's crude oil is transported, has significantly impacted oil and gasoline prices. As a result, the average cost of gasoline at U.S. gas stations has risen to $4.28 per gallon.

Rising fuel costs are having a significant impact on key economic sectors, including agriculture and transportation. The transportation sector, in particular, is expected to bear a substantial burden, with shipping companies such as UPS and FedEx anticipating a 30% increase in their fuel-related expenses.

Retailers absorbing additional costs ultimately pass them on to consumers through higher prices, exacerbating the impact of inflation exceeding 3% on U.S. household budgets, particularly those with limited incomes.
