Democrat Xavier Becerra closed the gap with Republican Steve Hilton, who is leading in the primary, following an update on the California gubernatorial vote count provided by the Los Angeles County Registrar of Voters Office.

With the latest data, published around 5:00 p.m., Becerra was in second place in the race, with 26% (1,420,809 votes), while Hilton consolidated his lead, with 28% (1,318,246 votes), after 56% of the ballots were counted.

Hilton had positioned himself as one of the most serious contenders to finish among the two candidates who would advance to the November general elections, even with fellow Republican Chad Bianco, with Democrats fearing being left out of the race.
