Xbox dropped the bomb, or rather reactivated one that had been ringing for months: Halo: Campaign Evolved, the remake of the 2001 classic, already has active early access and will officially arrive on July 28, 2026.

The news divides opinions among fans because, while some celebrate seeing Master Chief with Unreal Engine 5 graphics, others continue to wonder when Microsoft will dare to launch a new numbered installment of the saga. Still, it must be admitted, the project looks like a serious tribute to the FPS that defined entire consoles.

A return with early access already active

If you pre-ordered the Premium Edition or the Collector's Edition, you can now be playing from July 23 at 8:00 a.m. PDT. This five-day preview is exclusive to those who made that specific reservation, so if you bought the standard edition you will have to wait until the general launch on July 28, which also arrives on Xbox Game Pass on day one. The title will be available on Xbox Series X/S, PC via Steam and also on PlayStation 5, something that was surprising because Halo historically lived locked in the Xbox ecosystem.

The news that this remake brings

Campaign Evolved doesn't just up the resolution and call it a remake; includes an unpublished mission called Operation Meteorite, which functions as a kind of prequel and adds narrative content that never existed in the Bungie game. It also adds new weapons and secrets that expand exploration without betraying the essence of the original shooter, according to those who have already tried it. Another striking mechanic is the possibility of playing in third person by activating a special skull, an option designed for those who want to rediscover Master Chief from another angle.

The Unreal Engine 5 graphics engine gives the game a modern visual layer that respects the classic level design, something that several analyzes highlight as the studio's greatest achievement. The prices remained at $50 for the standard version and $70 for the premium, a figure that includes precisely that much-discussed early access.

Relief or excuse to continue waiting for Halo 6?

This is where the community splits into two camps, although in reality both are right in some ways. On the one hand, there are those who see this remake as a smart move by Halo Studios to reconnect with the fanbase before announcing something completely new. On the other hand, there is a fear that Campaign Evolved will end up being a temporary patch while the main saga remains undated, something that has been speculated since the project was confirmed in October 2025.

The truth is that the studio insists that this remake is born from a genuine affection for the original material and not as simple commercial filler, according to statements made by those responsible during the presentation. Meanwhile, players who have been asking for a new story for Master Chief for years will have to settle, for now, with reliving the campaign that made him legendary, yes, with more polish, more secrets and the occasional playable surprise that not even the most veterans saw coming.
