The Attorney General's Office (FGR) of Mexico described as "false information" the journalistic versions according to which it has "protected witnesses" who made accusations to initiate an investigation against Andrés Manuel López Beltrán, son of former president Andrés Manuel López Obrador, for crimes related to fuel theft.

“In relation to journalistic versions in which it is stated that this Office of the Attorney General of the Republic has protected witnesses who have made accusations to carry out an investigation against the son of a former president of Mexico, for crimes related to hydrocarbons, the FGR indicates that said information is false,” the agency stated in a statement.

Likewise, he highlighted that the Federal Public Ministry "does not have any evidence with the necessary legal force to initiate an investigation" against López Beltrán, whose US visa was canceled last Thursday.

The response from the FGR comes after leaders of the National Action Party (PAN) stated in a press conference that the son of the founder of the former Mexican president is the “head” of the fiscal huachicol, as published in a note on August 16 by the newspaper El Universal.

According to the media, Jorge Triana, spokesperson for the PAN, assured that “there is a protected witness detained by the prosecutor's huachicol” who implicates López Beltrán in this crime and argued that these allegations would have led the US Government to withdraw his visa.

On August 13, López Beltrán published on his social networks a letter addressed to the President of the United States, Donald Trump, in which he reported the cancellation of his visa to enter that country, a measure that he described as an act of a “political nature.”

He also denied that there was any reason to justify the decision, which, he said, was made by US Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Undersecretary Christopher Landau, who served as Mexico's ambassador during Trump's first term.

The above provoked a series of reactions from the ruling party, the National Regeneration Movement (Morena), which supported López Obrador's son, as did the president of Mexico, Claudia Sheinbaum.

"A visa is to enter a country (...). Nothing more than in Mexico the conviction tells us that the people rule. In Mexico there is no one who rules more than the people of Mexico," stated the president.
