The Los Angeles County Department of Public Health reported Wednesday that it is investigating a suspected flea-borne virus outbreak in the Pico-Union neighborhood of Los Angeles, as the number of cases rises throughout the county.

The public health authority said, in a statement, that five symptomatic cases associated with this outbreak have been detected this year, and that all patients recovered after requiring hospitalization.

“As cases of flea-borne typhus continue to rise in Los Angeles County, preventing exposure to infected fleas is more important than ever,” said Dr. Muntu Davis, physician and county Department of Public Health official.
