The death toll from the devastating earthquakes that shook northern Venezuela on June 24 rose to 4,118 people, authorities reported this Saturday, confirming 229 new victims compared to the previous toll.

In addition to the deaths, the official balance reports 16,740 injured people and thousands of families affected by the disaster, considered the most serious recorded in the country in decades.

The two earthquakes, of magnitudes 7.5 and 7.2, caused the collapse of at least 190 buildings and severe damage to hundreds of properties, mainly in the state of La Guaira, where the epicenter of the telluric movements was located.

Authorities estimate that more than 17,000 people lost their homes or were left with structural damage that makes them uninhabitable.

According to the official report, more than 33,000 rescuers, military, police and national and international brigades participate in the care work, while nearly 87,000 families have received humanitarian assistance and thousands of tons of food and basic supplies have been distributed.

Although the search operations for survivors have practically concluded, the tasks of recovering bodies, removing debris and assessing damage continue, while international organizations maintain calls to strengthen humanitarian aid and support the reconstruction of devastated areas.

The emergency has put the Venezuelan health system under pressure due to the high number of injuries and the damage to hospitals and basic infrastructure, while thousands of people remain displaced in temporary shelters.
