The Red Cross warns that the disaster in Venezuela is far from over, one month after the earthquakes
Continuing to distribute essential items and protect people and public health is a medium-term priority
The humanitarian needs in Venezuela remain very great a month after the earthquakes that shook the country on June 24 and caused more than 5,300 deaths, the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC) indicated this Thursday.
"This disaster is far from over. Continuing to distribute essential items and protect people and public health is a medium-term priority and later we will also have to ensure that livelihoods are recovered," said IFRC regional director for the Americas, Loyce Pace, in a statement.
According to the federation, one of the essential areas for humanitarian assistance in the short and medium term is access to safe drinking water, at a time when many families still depend on bottled water for drinking, washing and cooking.
Mental health care is another pillar, since “many survivors live with anxiety, fear, sadness and insomnia as they face the loss of loved ones, jobs and livelihoods.”
The third key point for assistance is primary health care, given that in some areas there is a risk of epidemic outbreaks and thousands of people with chronic diseases have not yet fully recovered the continuity of their treatments.
The Red Cross responded to the earthquakes by setting up a field hospital, supporting the rescue of survivors and families who had lost contact with loved ones, and distributing humanitarian aid.
It also set up an emergency clinic in La Guaira, managed by the Spanish Red Cross, which will operate for four months and is already providing health and psychosocial support services that will benefit nearly 30,000 people, the IFRC statement said.
