Thousands of unaccompanied immigrant children in the United States could lose their right to legal representation as of July 31, when the federal contract that finances these services expires, specialized organizations warned during a conference organized by Defending Our Neighbors Fund.

Legal aid providers warned that, if the government does not renew the agreement, tens of thousands of minors will have to face immigration court proceedings alone, while the government will continue to be represented by specialized lawyers.

They warn about a risk to due process

According to organizers, since November 2025 the Trump administration has withheld payments to organizations representing minors, presumably to pressure them to hand over confidential information about their clients. Given this, the fund has granted emergency resources to maintain part of the legal attention, although it warns that this help will no longer be enough.

Michael Lukens, executive director of the Amica Center for Immigrant Rights, assured that the decision puts fundamental guarantees at risk.
