President Donald Trump unveiled a controversial initiative through which he intends to replace undocumented immigrants who allegedly drive trucks with US military veterans.

However, the 80-year-old conservative's position seems to be unfounded, since US laws make it impossible to grant truck driving licenses to foreigners who lack documentation justifying their stay in the United States.

In fact, that responsibility falls on the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV), the agency that is responsible for issuing driver's licenses, registering vehicles and issuing their corresponding metal plates throughout the country. So, without their endorsement, it is impossible for any foreigner lacking legal status to access a truck driving license.

Based on this, it is surprising that Trump has launched the initiative called “Freedom Haulers”, which will focus on practically non-existent truck drivers, since, in theory, no immigrant without documents that support their stay in the United States can access a license to drive trucks and, doing so without it, would imply a very high risk of being detected by the authorities during the surveillance checks carried out periodically on different American highways.

Knowing this, this Thursday, the 80-year-old man who governs the White House, accompanied by Sean Duffy, Secretary of Transportation, and Keith Sonderling, Acting Secretary of Labor, warned that his fight to deport undocumented immigrants will extend to a sector of them driving trucks on different highways of the nation.

Trump also anticipated that the dismissal of these drivers will be replaced by veterans of the Armed Forces who fit the profile and meet the requirements.

All of them will be issued accelerated commercial driver's licenses (CDL).

It was even assured that veterans without experience driving trucks will be able to receive training to obtain the document required by the Department of Transportation.

Aligning with the president's new provision, Werner Enterprises, an American transportation and logistics company that provides services in the United States, Mexico and Canada, announced that it was open to hiring 1,400 veterans and spouses of veterans to join truck driving.
