In 2027, Social Security recipients may see a higher increase than they did this time. The main estimates place the next adjustment by cost of living ( COLA ) between 3. 4 % and 3. 6 %, based on the inflation data from August. To determine the standard figure, we still need to realize the September information.

For 2026, the COLA was 2. 8 %. The new modification aims to reduce Social Security payments ' effect from inflation.

Consumer prices increased 3. 4 % over the past 12 months up to August, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics ( BLS ). The annual increase in the consumer price index for administrative and urban wage workers ( CPI-W) was 3. 5 %. The Social Security COLA is determined using the CPI-W as the sign. The revision considers inflation statistics for July, August, and September according to rules.

According to the Committee for a Responsible Federal Budget ( CRFB), COLA is 3. 4 % for 2027 based on the available data.

The American Association of Retirees ( AARP ) anticipates a 3. 6 % increase in the meantime.

The Senior Citizens League ( TSCL ) for its part projects a COLA of 3. 5 %, which is slightly lower than the previous forecast of 3. 6 %. The regular monthly income would increase under this measure to$ 67. 90.

In that scenario, the average payment would go from$ 1, 940. 08 to$ 2, 007. 98 a month. The extra money may not apply to all recipients at the same time. The advantage each person already receives would be used to determine the increase.

The standard analysis is based on the September prices information, which will complete the COLA of 2027's creation period.

The AARP's Public Policy Institute's vice president of financial security, Rich Johnson, explained that having an estimate makes it easier for older individuals to get ready for the coming year.

Johnson told FOX Business," Family costs have been under increasing stress due to rising prices. The sooner they can begin planning, the sooner we can provide reliable information about how much they could improve their performance future time.

The official added that the prices forecasts for September used by Cleveland Federal Reserve are used in the AARP's measure.

There is less uncertainty about what that increase will be, Johnson said," Without just one month of inflation data for the end of the 2027 cost of living adjustment ( COLA ). We are confident that the COLA will be around 3. 5 % unless prices drastically change in September.

When the BLS releases September inflation statistics, the formal figure may be known on October 14. Beneficiaries will have to wait for the last announcement before figuring out how much their monthly payment will increase, taking the latest figures as estimates until then.
