X has just moved the board of monetization for creators and this time the change is big. Elon Musk's platform announced that its old revenue sharing program, known as Creator Revenue Sharing, is in the past as of September 7, 2026. In its place comes Original Content Rewards, a scheme that promises to reward those who really contribute their own ideas, reports, original humor or valuable analysis, leaving out those who only make a living by republishing what others have already done.

The news comes at a time when social networks are rethinking how they pay their creators and X wants to make it clear that his priority is now originality over simple viral reach. In other words, it is no longer enough for a post to go viral thanks to a foreign topic, you have to put your own stamp on it for it to count.

How the new X payment system works

The heart of Original Content Rewards are so-called “qualified impressions.” X explains that these are generated when a user with a Premium, Premium or Premium Business subscription views at least 50% of a publication while browsing their Home Timeline, either in the “For you” tab or in “Following”. Each of those unique views adds in favor of the creator, but be careful, duplicate, purchased, promoted or artificially generated impressions are automatically excluded from the count.

Payments will be made every two weeks as long as the account and content remain eligible on an ongoing basis, not just at the time of enrollment. The first disbursement under this new scheme is scheduled for August 28, 2026, while those who came from the old program and register from September 8 will receive their first payment on September 25. To get paid you need to have a verified Stripe account connected and have completed identity verification from Creator Studio.

The new requirements to monetize in X

Here comes the part that all creators want to know. To apply for the Original Content Rewards program, X asks to comply with a fairly specific list of conditions.

The interesting thing is that these requirements are not met just once and that's it, you have to keep them active all the time to continue receiving payments. If at any time the creator fails to meet any condition, they simply exit the program until they qualify again.

What really counts as original content

X was pretty specific with what does and doesn't add up. Original content is considered to be the report or analysis, photos and videos recorded by the same user, as well as memes, graphics or illustrations created from scratch. Comments and reactions to other people's posts can also qualify, as long as they provide real and significant value, something more than a simple phrase repeating what has already been said.

On the other hand, posts copied from another account, content downloaded and re-uploaded without transformation, and republications that only add descriptive text without contributing anything new are completely discarded. The app pays special attention to detecting content recycling, so those who made a living from reposting other people's things will have to rethink their strategy if they want to continue generating income.

This change confirms something that has been coming for a long time, X wants to build a community of creators who contribute their own voice and not just repeat trends. For journalists, digital artists, memers and analysts who produce genuine content, the news sounds quite promising.
