A three-year-old boy died after being trapped inside a car in Ponchatoula where temperatures reached 93 degrees Fahrenheit.
A three-year-old boy died Friday in Ponchatoula, Louisiana, after entering a parked car belonging to a neighbor and becoming trapped inside in extreme temperatures.
Ponchatoula Police reported that the juvenile, identified as Jahcari Kash James, was found unconscious around 3:15 p.m. inside the vehicle, located in the area of Methvin Lane. That day, the high temperature in the city reached 93 degrees Fahrenheit.
According to investigators, the child would have left his home, entered the car—which was unlocked—and was subsequently unable to get out.
His relatives noticed his absence and began looking for him with the help of neighbors. Shortly after, the owner of the vehicle found the minor sitting in the driver's seat.
“The owner of the vehicle located the child in the driver's seat, where temperatures were extremely high,” the Ponchatoula Police Department said in a statement posted on Facebook.
The family attempted to perform first aid maneuvers while emergency services arrived.
Jahcari was taken by ambulance to North Oaks Medical Center in Hammond, where he was later pronounced dead.
The investigation continues and charges are not ruled out.
According to police reports to the Daily Mail, the medical examiner determined that the minor remained in the car for approximately 50 minutes.
The authorities indicated that the investigation continues and that, for the moment, the possibility of filing criminal charges related to the case has not been ruled out.
Likewise, they indicated that they are awaiting the official results of the autopsy before offering new details.
Family and friends say goodbye to the minor
After the tragedy, a GoFundMe campaign was created to help the family with funeral expenses and provide financial support to the child's mother, Kadence James, who also cares for another daughter.
The campaign description notes that the woman faces “an unimaginable loss” after the death of her three-year-old son.
Farewell messages also multiplied on social networks.
"My heart is completely broken. Fly high, my child. Please keep my family in your prayers during this difficult time," Syntoria Barnes, who identified herself as the child's godfather, wrote on Facebook.
The child's godmother, Desiree Partirdge, also expressed her pain and said that the loss is “unreal” to her.
Experts remind us of the danger of cars in high temperatures
The tragedy occurred amid intense heat conditions in Louisiana.
Chloe Burke of Kids and Car Safety told WBRZ2 that the interior of a vehicle can heat up quickly, even when the temperature outside seems moderate.
According to the specialist, on an 80-degree Fahrenheit day, the interior of a car can reach 100 degrees in just 10 minutes, while after an hour it can rise to 130 or 140 degrees.
Burke also warned that children are especially vulnerable to extreme heat, as their body temperature rises three to five times faster than that of an adult.
